Chapter 4

‘Goodness me,’ Martha said as she came into the teahouse the next afternoon, ‘it’s so quiet out there today. It’s like a ghost town. Where is everyone, Misty?’

‘It’s been the same in here for a couple of days, Martha,’ I told her. ‘I think everyone’s still in shock from what happened the other day. No one seems to be working. I think they’re all just staying at home.’

‘I’m probably still in shock myself,’ Martha said. ‘Bring me a cup of that jasmine tea, dear. And maybe a poppy seed muffin.’

For once I was glad that the teahouse was empty, even if it meant I was losing money, and I made myself a cup of tea at the same time as I made Martha’s and carried it all over to her table where I sat down beside her.

‘So what’s the latest, Martha?’ I asked. ‘Have you got any news for me today?’

But she just shook her head sadly. ‘There’s no one about to learn anything from,’ she said. ‘I know Vince Taylor has been formally charged now, and that the police are quite happy they’ve got the right person. That at least means there won’t be anyone poking around here and disturbing us. But apart from that I’m just at a loose end. I don’t know what to do with myself.’

‘Well tell me about Bob Thompkins and Cassandra Short,’ I said. ‘What went on with them in the past? I know Bob dumped Cassandra unceremoniously, but that’s all I know about it. I don’t really know any of the details.’

Her little face lit up, and she broke the top off her muffin and split it into a few pieces on her plate.

‘Cassandra’s very conflicted about what happened to Bob,’ she said. ‘One the one hand she’s devastated that he’s gone, but on the other she can’t help but feel he got what he deserved. I think she might even be feeling a little bit glad about it all in secret, and that’s what’s making her so conflicted. A touch of guilt about it all.’

‘So they used to be engaged?’ I asked.

‘From what I understand,’ Martha said. ‘This was back when Cassandra lived out east. Bob Thompkins lived in the same area, and as far as Cassandra understood it they were going to be together for life. They were living together, all ready to get married. I think they even had a little business together. Then, right out of the blue, Bob Thompkins took off with another woman and took most of Cassandra’s money with him. Out of the business I think. He was a nasty little man.’

I sighed. ‘I’m surprised a woman like Cassandra could ever be interested in him in the first place,’ I said. ‘And even more surprised a second woman would want to run off with him. What on earth can they possibly have seen in him?’

Martha thought about it for a moment. ‘Maybe some women just can’t resist bright blue,’ she said, and we laughed.

‘Or little gray mustaches,’ I added.
